Established in the 16th century AD, it houses the revered relic of Buddha’s tooth. Situated near the royal palace complex overlooking Kandy Lake, it holds great significance for the Sinhalese people. Every day, thousands of pilgrims dressed in white visit the temple to offer lotus blossoms and prayers known as pujas. Although the tooth relic remains hidden within a gold casket, visitors can still catch a glimpse of the inner shrine during these ceremonies.
During the annual Esala Perahera procession, the relic casket is paraded through the streets atop a male elephant. This 10-day festival is one of the largest Buddhist festivals globally and the most significant in Sri Lanka.
The best times to visit the temple are in the morning or evening during ceremonial offerings and prayers. Proper attire is essential, with clothing covering legs and shoulders, and shoes must be removed before entering the holy temple.
